Do you remember the Michael Jordan fade away with the exuberant fist pumped leap after it fell in? Or Doug Flutie’s hailmary pass? Or Mary Lou Retton’s perfect 10? Or any of the numerous grand slam homers, winning baskets, & impossible feats for that elusive chance to be crowned champ? Of course we do! Those moments will be forever imbedded in our memories as some of the greatest moments in sports history. Especially if we are avid fans. Those moments are often shared during the losing seasons of our favorite teams to boost our confidence during those not so memorable moments.
But do we remember all the moments leading up to those great moments? The missed shots. The errant passes.The not-so-hero moments of being placed on the bench for poor performances. We tend to forget those moments. And what about the players. They have memories both on the court and in the practice gym. Do they see their feats of hero moments like the fans? Or do they see the little things about a coach or achieving a goal by the end of the season as more memorable moments? I would say the latter versus the former being a former athlete and coach.
The underlying questions is……What really matters in sports? The winning basket? The championship? The hero being lifted up on shoulders to give him all the glory? I would normally say none of those. As a former coach & athlete I see sports as more of a confidence booster, team building, accountability opportunities, and mentor/mentee relationships that last for years. However, after seeing a short video today I would say there are moments that need to be glory filled on the hero of the game. Watch and voice your opinion. I would say there are about 1,000 heroes in this moment. Do you agree? Then take a moment to see if we really treat sports the way we should.
